Give a big welcome to Karina of Soap That Makes Scents on Etsy!

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Karina and her loving husband currently live and play in Queens, New York. What got her started with her bath and body products is quite a happenstance situation...

She once accompanied her husband on a business trip to England-"It got pretty boring waiting around the hotel in between dinner banquets and conferences," said Karina, "so I found out, quite by accident, that there was a local soap-making class being held near the hotel. I went, fell in love, and haven't looked back!"

Since then, Karina has, quite literally, made a living off her soap and bath products! She tells me her soap is a full-time job, and her Etsy site is a part of the overall business-Besides her online venues, she does weekly craft shows year round, as well as, private home shows and several wholesale accounts across the nation.

Who knew all of that wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for setting up shop on Etsy?!

As a seasoned soap maker, you can understand that all of her inspirations come from scents themselves. According to Karina, scents invoke memories and have the power to bring you back to special times in your life. They can put you in a certain mood and make you a feel a certain way-"Every time I get in a shipment of essential oils and fragrance oils, I tear open the box like it's Christmas morning and have to smell everything right away. I simply cannot wait. Then I get out my soap journal and write down each scent-if it's a new one I haven't worked with yet, as well as any feelings it may invoke in me and thoughts on how to describe it which helps speed up the listing process. Scents are inspiring and I want to capture a moment of life in every single bar."

Advice from Karina: "Do not expect a flock of buyers in your store the moment you list your first item. Networking is extremely important all of the time, but even more so in the beginning stages of your business. It does take time to build a customer base, and things won't happen magically overnight no matter how original and exciting your items are. Promote to your target audience instead of just everywhere you can---you'll save a lot of time, energy and money this way."
